Clinton's Hometown Heroes

Telling the Stories of Those Who Served

In honor of the bravery, courage, and sacrifice of Clinton's men and women who served during wartime, individual flags are posted throughout town to recognize each of their contributions.

On this website, you can learn more about each Hometown Hero's personal story.

As we have gathered the stories of our Heroes, emerging from this project have been amazing examples of sacrifice, heroism and selfless service. Many American generations have faced wartime. Each time the nation calls, Clinton men and women raise their right hands and go into harm’s way to preserve our way of life.

Clinton Veterans have served and died on Okinawa, in the trenches of France during WW I, following the Baton Death March and on many other battlefields. We have had Infantryman, Artilleryman, Air crewman, Tail Gunners, Sailors, and Nurses. Our town has contributed much to our nation’s freedoms. We do not forget our Veterans and the sacrifices of their families.

To date, we have placed 75 wartime Veterans’ banners throughout town. Only one is known to be a living World War II Veteran from Clinton; Leroy Starbird served as an Artilleryman in Europe, fighting in the Battle of the Bulge.

During the holiday season, we place Christmas Wreaths below the banners to indicate that our Wartime Veterans are not forgotten. Following the holiday season, the banners are removed and preserved from the winter weather before they are again displayed in May prior to Memorial Day.

Anyone wishing to honor the wartime service of a family member or friend that has lived in Clinton may complete our Nominate a Hero form, or email Buddy Frost.
