Robert Rogers
Robert Rogers, commonly known as Bob, was born May 25, 1926, in Boston, son of John and Esther (Sawyer) Rogers. He attended schools in Dedham, Mass., and the Norfolk County Agricultural High School in Walpole, Mass.
At the age of 17, he convinced his father to sign for him to join the Navy, serving in the European Theater, ending up in the Marines as a corpsman. After the war he returned to Massachusetts to marry his wife of 52 years, the former Barbara Jones, and proceeded to earn a degree from the University of Massachusetts, Stockbridge School of Agriculture. Bob and Barbara had two boys and two girls: Edie, Jack, Judy and Matt.
In 1950, Bob and Barbara purchased the family farm on the Rogers Road in Clinton. "Smiling Bob" was a licensed auctioneer, attending school in Mason City, Iowa. He did auctions of all types around central Maine.
He retired from farming in 1981, selling the farm to his sons. After retirement, he and Barbara spent several years summering on Prince Edward Island and their winters in Zephyrhills, Fla.
Bob was known far and wide for his quick wit, many jokes and nicknames. He left a lasting impression on anyone lucky enough to meet him.
At the age of 82, Bob passed away on June 10, 2008, in his home with his family and faithful companion, his dog, Skippy at his side.
