Dick Goodwin
Richard Arthur Goodwin was born on January 17, 1933, in Burnham, Maine to Lawrence P. and Doris L. Goodwin. Dick was educated in the schools of Clinton, Maine and Fairfield, Maine. He served in the United States Air Force from 1950 to 1954 as an Airman first class during the Korean War.
After the war he married Diane, they had two boys Lawrence and Sanford. He took over Bo’s opened a grocery store on Main Street, Clinton, in 1961. After owning a dairy farm in Skowhegan, Maine for several years, Dick opened a grocery store on Main Street in Clinton in 1961. Dick expanded his business in 1969, building a new store just down the street from the first store. His passion was his grocery store and he took great pride in providing a full-service grocery store for the people in the town of Clinton. Even though his son, Sanford, managed the store, Dick was in the store nearly every day. Dick bought a grocery store in Unity in the early nineties, and sold it eight years later after turning it into a profitable business.
Dick was a 50 year member and Past Master of Sebasticook Lodge No. 146 A.F. & A.M. in Clinton, a 50 year member and Past Lion King of the Clinton Lions Club, a 50 year member of the American Legion Post 186 in Clinton, Maine, a member and Past President of the Maine Grocers Association, a member and Past Patron of Fireside Chapter 103, Order of the Eastern Star, a member of Anah Shrine, a member of The Valley of Augusta and Portland Scottish Rite Bodies, and a former member of the Jaycees.
Dick served for 17 years on the Board of Directors for Associated Grocers of Maine and four years as Chairman of the Board. He was a recipient of the Spirit of America Award from National Grocers Association.
His second marriage was to Marge Higgins. He was a member of Brown Memorial United Methodist Church in Clinton, Maine. Dick believed that one should support their community, and served on various town committees, and was a Director on the Board of the Clinton Water District.
Beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, uncle, and brother, Dick died on January 5, 2013, at his home in Clinton, Maine.
